#1 : Go for a walk

May 14, 2017

As the British sun slowly wakes up for the summer season it is the perfect time to start walking more. There are multiple benefits to adding in thirty minutes of cardiovascular exercise such as walking into your daily routine.

Walking burns calories.
You can expect to burn around 70 calories every 30 minutes when walking at a moderate pace. If you decide to step up the pace, a strenuous walk will burn approximately 90 calories every 30 minutes. If you would like to monitor how many calories you are burning with your efforts you can track this using your phone app (e.g. Map My Walk) or invest in a Fitbit.

Walking is good for the body.

There are a multitude of health benefits as a result of increasing your levels of cardiovascular exercise. As we have already mentioned walking can help contribute to weight loss but were you also aware that it can help to lower cholesterol and blood pressure? These parameters both play a role in long term cardiovascular health which is a huge contributor of morbidity and mortality in the western word.  A brisk walk outside in the sun will also help boost vitamin D levels which is important for bone health and multiple other health benefits.

Walking is good for the glutes!

If you are looking to tone your bum and thighs then walking is a great low impact option. Add an incline into your walking route and feel the burn!

Walking is good for the mind.

Increasing your activity levels helps boost endorphins (happy hormones) to help boost our mood and lower stress levels leading to a happier, healthier you.

Walking is free

You don't need a fancy gym pass to take part. Walking is something that you can decide to take up by yourself or with others. If you need some inspiration of walking routes near you then check out your local council website or head to a walking route site such as Map My Walk. You will be surprised at what is on your doorstop!
